Quick Answer: NRI groom verification is a pre-marriage check of an overseas Indian’s job, immigration status, marital history, address abroad and family back in India. A proper check runs on two fronts at once: field work in India and partner investigators in the country where he lives. Expect three to four weeks and a higher fee than a local check.
Key Takeaways
- The two questions that matter most with an NRI match are his real visa status and whether he is already married abroad.
- Ask for documents early and openly. A genuine NRI groom with a real job can show them in a day.
- Verification has to happen in both countries; checks done only in India miss most of an NRI’s adult life.
- Government data shows abandonment by NRI spouses is a live problem, not a rumour.
- Register the marriage in India and keep copies of every document, even if the check comes back clean.
Every winter we get the same phone call, give or take the city. “He’s in New Jersey. Software. Green card process going on. The wedding is in six weeks and he lands on the 20th.” The family has seen photos of the apartment, a LinkedIn profile and a video call from what looks like an office. Nobody in Delhi has ever met anyone who knows him there.
That last sentence is the whole problem. With a local match, your relatives, neighbours and colleagues form an informal verification network without anyone asking. With an NRI groom, that network stops at the airport. This guide explains what to verify, what you can ask for yourself, how cross-border checks actually work and how long they take.
What is NRI groom verification?
NRI groom verification is a background check on a prospective groom (or bride) who lives and works outside India. It confirms the claims that made the match attractive: overseas employment, salary, immigration status, residence and marital status abroad, along with the usual checks on the family in India. It is a specialised form of a pre-matrimonial investigation, and it needs investigators on the ground in both countries.
The same process applies to an NRI bride. Grooms’ families in Delhi NCR increasingly ask for it, especially when the bride is settled abroad and the groom would be moving to join her.
Why does an NRI match need extra care?
Because the risks are well documented, and the remedies are slow once the person is abroad. The Ministry of External Affairs told the Rajya Sabha in March 2025 that Indian missions had received 1,617 complaints from women allegedly abandoned by NRI spouses abroad over five years. In a separate reply in December 2024, the ministry said its missions had assisted 1,871 distressed or abandoned Indian women, with the Dubai mission alone handling 1,044 cases (ThePrint).
Those are only the women who reached a mission. In June 2026, National Commission for Women chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar said nearly 32,000 women had been abandoned by NRI husbands in Punjab (The Tribune). The Law Commission’s 287th Report (February 2024) called out the “rising occurrence of fraudulent marriages involving NRIs” and recommended compulsory registration of such marriages.
None of this means NRI matches are risky by default. Most are exactly what they appear to be. It means the cost of not checking is unusually high.
From the field: “With NRI cases, the lie is rarely the job. It’s the paperwork around the job. He works at the company, fine. But he’s on a visa that ends in March, or he’s still legally married to someone in Toronto. Families check the salary and forget the status.” Gaurav Aggarwal, Founder & Lead Investigator, Alliance Detective Agency
What should you verify about an NRI groom?
Start with the six areas below. The first three are where NRI cases differ most from local ones.
1. Immigration and visa status
Is he a citizen of that country, a permanent resident or on a temporary work visa? This decides whether you can join him, when, and on what terms. In the USA, for example, the spouse of an H-1B worker usually travels on a dependent H-4 visa, while a green card holder sponsors a spouse through a separate petition that can take far longer. Ask which category applies, then ask to see it.
2. Marital status abroad
A divorce, a live-in partner or a marriage registered abroad may never reach anyone in India. This is the single most common serious finding in our NRI cases. It is confirmed through records where they are public, community enquiries abroad and careful questioning of the paper trail.
3. Employment and actual income
Confirm the employer exists, that he works there now and that the role matches. A contract role through a staffing agency is a different life from a permanent job at the parent company, even if the LinkedIn headline looks the same.
4. Address and lifestyle abroad
Does he live where he says? Alone, with flatmates, with a partner? A discreet visit by a partner investigator answers this in a way no video call can.
5. Family in India
The family home in Delhi NCR or elsewhere still needs a normal check: property, reputation, disputes, and whether the family’s story about their son matches what neighbours know.
6. Court cases in either country
Search Indian court records and, where possible, the public court records of the country he lives in.
Country by country: what changes
The checks stay the same, but what is publicly available, and how long it takes, varies a lot. The table gives a practical overview from cases we handle. Timelines are indicative.
| Country | Status question to settle | Useful public sources | Typical time for overseas leg |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | Citizen, green card holder or temporary visa (H-1B, L-1, F-1/OPT)? | Federal court records via PACER; state court and business registries vary by state | 2 to 3 weeks |
| Canada | Citizen, permanent resident or work/study permit? | Provincial court and business registries (vary by province) | 2 to 3 weeks |
| UK | British citizen, settled status or a time-limited visa? | Company directors on Companies House | 2 to 3 weeks |
| UAE and Gulf | Residence visa and sponsoring employer; is family sponsorship possible on his salary? | Limited public records; field enquiries carry more weight | 2 to 4 weeks |
| Australia | Citizen, permanent resident or temporary visa? | State court lists and company registers | 2 to 3 weeks |
We handle the overseas leg through partner investigators in these countries. You can read how that works on our international network page.
Which documents should you ask an NRI groom for?
Ask early, ask both sides to share and keep it matter-of-fact. In our experience, a genuine candidate takes this well. These are reasonable requests:
- Passport bio page and current visa or residence permit (or proof of citizenship).
- A recent employment letter and the last three payslips.
- Tax return or tax summary for the last year, in whatever form that country uses.
- A lease or utility bill showing his current address.
- If previously married: the final divorce decree, not a “separation agreement” or a statement that it is “in process”.
- Educational degrees, if the match was made on them.
Documents can be forged, of course. Their real value is twofold: they give investigators specifics to verify, and a refusal or a long delay is itself information.
From the field: “I tell families: you are not insulting anyone by asking for a payslip. You are insulting your daughter if you don’t.” Gaurav Aggarwal

How does a cross-border verification work, step by step?
- Consultation and scope (days 1 to 2). You share the biodata, his overseas address, employer, visa claims and any documents. We decide together which questions matter and in which country.
- Desk research in both countries (days 2 to 6). Public court and company records, professional listings and open online information are reviewed and cross-checked against what he has told you.
- India field work (days 3 to 12). Our team checks the family home, local reputation, property and any past addresses in India. Families in Noida and East Delhi are usually covered by our team in Noida and the Dilshad Garden head office.
- Overseas field work (days 5 to 20). A partner investigator verifies the residence, makes discreet employment and community enquiries, and, where lawful, observes lifestyle over agreed days.
- Consolidated report (days 18 to 28). One report, with every claim marked verified, unverified or contradicted, and a call to walk you through it.
How long does it take and what does it cost?
Plan for three to four weeks for a full two-country check. That is why we tell families to start before the roka, not after the wedding cards are printed. A narrower check, such as confirming only the employer abroad, can be faster.
Costs depend on the country, how many questions you need answered and whether overseas observation is required. As an indicative guide only, an NRI check costs noticeably more than a local one because two teams work on it. For local pre-marriage pricing and what drives it, see our guide on pre-matrimonial investigation cost in Delhi; we give a written quote for each NRI case after the first consultation.
What are the red flags in an NRI match?
- He can never be visited abroad before the wedding, and there is always a reason.
- Vague answers about visa type (“it’s all in process”).
- Pressure for a very short engagement timed to his leave dates.
- Requests for large cash gifts, or for the bride’s family to pay for his tickets or visa costs.
- Friends and colleagues from abroad who never appear on calls or at functions.
- A wedding in India with no plan to register the marriage.
What can you do yourself, and what should you do after the wedding?
Before the wedding, talk to the Indian side of his life (old classmates, past landlords, family friends) and, if you can, someone who has visited him abroad. Check Indian court records through the eCourts portal. Insist on a video call that shows his home and neighbourhood rather than a single room.
After the wedding, register the marriage in India promptly and keep certified copies of the certificate, his passport and visa pages, and his address abroad. Keep your own copy of your passport and visa, and save the contact details of the nearest Indian mission. The government’s MADAD consular grievance portal and Indian missions provide counselling and guidance, and the Indian Community Welfare Fund can support eligible women in distress abroad, according to the MEA’s reply to Parliament. You hope never to need any of this. Have it ready anyway.
Legal and ethical note
Alliance and its overseas partners work only through lawful methods: public records, consented documents, field enquiries and observation in public places. In India we operate within the Constitution’s Article 21 right to privacy, the IT Act 2000, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023; abroad, partners follow the local law of their country. We never hack email or social accounts, install spyware, tap phones or obtain bank, telecom or immigration records without consent. Frequently Asked Questions
How can I verify an NRI groom’s job abroad?
Ask for a recent employment letter and payslips, then have them independently confirmed. A partner investigator in that country can verify that the employer exists, that he currently works there and that the role matches what he claims. Contract roles through staffing firms are common, so check who actually employs and pays him.
Can a detective find out if an NRI groom is already married abroad?
Often, yes, but it takes work in both countries. Investigators combine public records where they exist, community enquiries abroad, checks on his residence and his documents. A previous marriage or a live-in partner abroad is one of the most common serious findings in NRI cases. The report will say whether a finding is confirmed or only indicated.
How long does NRI background verification take?
A full check covering both India and the country of residence usually takes three to four weeks. A single-point check, such as confirming the overseas employer, can be quicker. Gulf countries sometimes take longer because fewer records are public. Start before the roka or engagement so the findings arrive while you can still act on them.
Is it legal to verify an NRI groom in India?
Yes, when lawful methods are used: public records, documents he shares, field enquiries and observation in public places. It becomes illegal when it involves hacking, spyware, phone tapping or obtaining bank, telecom or immigration records without consent. Overseas partners must also follow the law of the country where they work.
Which countries can NRI verification cover?
Most requests from Delhi NCR families involve the USA, Canada, the UK, the UAE and other Gulf states, Australia and Singapore. Coverage depends on an agency’s partner network abroad. Ask any agency which countries it covers directly through partners, rather than through internet searches alone, before you pay.
What documents should an NRI groom show before marriage?
Reasonable requests include his passport and current visa or residence permit, an employment letter and recent payslips, a tax return, proof of his current address and, if previously married, the final divorce decree. Both families can exchange these openly. A refusal or long delay is itself useful information.
Should an NRI marriage be registered in India?
Yes. Registering promptly gives the bride a clear legal record that helps with visas, and with remedies if something goes wrong. The Law Commission’s 287th Report recommended making registration of NRI marriages compulsory within 30 days. Keep certified copies of the certificate and his passport and visa pages.
Check both countries, then decide
An NRI match can be a wonderful thing. It can also put your daughter or son thousands of kilometres away from everyone who could help if the story turns out to be untrue. Ask for documents, talk to people who know his life abroad and, if the answers still don’t line up, let investigators in both countries confirm the rest before the dates are fixed.
Alliance has handled pre-marriage and NRI cases from Delhi NCR for more than 20 years. To talk through a proposal in confidence, contact our team and we’ll tell you plainly what a check would involve.
