Quick Answer
If someone is blackmailing you with an intimate or deepfake video, or you’ve sent money to an online partner you’ve never met, report it first: call 1930 and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in, ideally within hours. A private investigator works alongside the police, verifying who the person really is and documenting evidence properly.
Key Takeaways
- Money already gone? Call 1930 at once. Banks can only freeze funds that are still sitting somewhere in the chain.
- Never pay a sextortion demand. Payments tend to raise the price, they rarely end the threat.
- Police trace phone numbers, bank accounts and make arrests. A private investigator can’t, and shouldn’t claim to.
- A PI earns their fee before the damage: checking whether an online partner’s name, job, family and NRI story are real.
- Intimate or deepfake content posted online must be taken down by platforms within 24 hours of a complaint under MeitY’s 2025 SOP.
The call usually comes after 11 at night. A man in his thirties from Noida, voice low so his parents in the next room won’t hear, says a woman he’d been chatting with for three weeks has sent him a clip of himself from a video call. Except it isn’t quite him. The face is his, the rest is someone else’s. She wants ?50,000 by morning, or the clip goes to every contact on his Instagram. (That’s a composite of calls we get, not one client, but you’d be surprised how little the details change.)
He has two questions. Should he pay? And who does he call, the police or us? The answer to the second is both, in a particular order. This guide lays out that order, so that if it happens to you or someone at home in 2027, you lose as little as possible.
What is a romance scam, and how is sextortion different?
A romance scam is fraud where someone builds a fake relationship online, on a dating app, social media or a matrimonial site, and then uses the trust to extract money. The “emergency” comes later: a customs fee on a gift, a hospital bill, a visa problem, an investment you’d be silly to miss.
Sextortion is blackmail using sexual images or video, real or fabricated. A typical script moves from friendly chat to a video call where the other side plays explicit content, records your face and threatens to send it to your family.
Deepfake blackmail is the newer version. AI tools put your face on someone else’s body or clone a voice, and now build entire fake suitors. In June 2026, Mumbai’s cyber police warned of a deepfake marriage proposal scam in which fraudsters on matrimonial and social platforms used AI photos, deepfake video and voice cloning to pose as wealthy professionals living abroad.
How common are these scams heading into 2027?
Common enough to plan for. A few verified data points:
- On 15 October 2026, Delhi Police reported busting a sextortion racket after a Gurugram resident paid ?14.63 lakh in multiple transfers to callers posing as police. The money ran through mule accounts traced to Rajasthan’s Deeg district and the Mewat region, and investigators linked 15 other complaints from different states to the same accounts.
- In Bengaluru, a man lost ?1.85 lakh to an online date who threatened him with an AI-morphed video. Deccan Herald (12 October 2026) reported that Karnataka recorded 57 sextortion cases through August 2026, against 104 in all of 2025 and 20 in 2024.
- The Ministry of Home Affairs says its Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System had saved more than ?11,158 crore across more than 32.80 lakh complaints up to 30 June 2026.
Reported cases are the floor. Shame keeps many victims quiet, which is what the gangs count on.
What should you do in the first hour?
Before you ring anyone, including us, do these things in this order:
- Stop replying and don’t pay. Don’t argue, plead or negotiate. Every reply tells them you’re still on the hook.
- Save everything before you block. Screenshot the profile page and URL, username, phone numbers, UPI IDs, bank details, transaction references and the full chat with timestamps.
- If money moved, call 1930 now. Then call your bank’s fraud line and ask for the transaction to be flagged. Speed matters more than anything else here.
- File on cybercrime.gov.in. Choose the right category, attach your evidence and write down the acknowledgement number.
- Report the account and any posted content to the platform. Under the MeitY SOP on non-consensual intimate imagery issued in November 2025, intermediaries must remove such content within 24 hours of a complaint.
- Lock down your accounts. Hide your friends and followers lists, change passwords and turn on two-factor authentication. Scammers threaten your contacts because they can see them.
- Tell one person you trust. A sibling, a friend, a parent. Panic makes bad decisions; company makes better ones.
“The people who lose the most aren’t the ones who were fooled. They’re the ones who paid the second and third time, hoping it would stop. It doesn’t stop because you paid. It usually stops when you go quiet and the complaint is on record.”

Cyber cell or private investigator: who does what?
The police come first wherever a crime has already happened. We come first only where nothing has been lost yet.
| Your situation | Go first to | Where a PI helps | What a PI can’t do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Money sent in the last few hours | 1930 and your bank, immediately | Later, organising your evidence file | Freeze or recover funds |
| Sextortion threat, real or morphed video | cybercrime.gov.in, cyber police, platform report | Documenting threats properly, support through the complaint | Trace the phone or IP owner |
| Online partner asking for money, nothing sent yet | A private investigator | Verifying name, photos, job, address and family | Access their phone, email or bank |
| Matrimonial match “living abroad” | A private investigator | Checking the overseas job, address and marital status through partners abroad | Pull immigration or passport records |
| Deepfake of you circulating online | Platform complaint and cybercrime.gov.in | Logging where it appears, preserving proof that it’s fake | Delete the content themselves |
What can a private investigator legally do in a romance scam case?
More than people expect, as long as you hire them early. Our cyber crime investigation service usually does four kinds of work on these cases.
Verify the person behind the profile
Most fake suitors borrow a real person’s photos. Reverse image searches often show the pictures belong to a model or a gym trainer in another country. Then we test the story: does the hospital, bank or IT firm he named actually employ him? Does the family address in Dwarka or Indirapuram exist, and does anyone there know him? A discreet background check answers those questions in days, often before the first money request.
Check “settled abroad” claims
The scammer is nearly always abroad, which conveniently explains why he can’t meet you. For matrimonial matches who claim an overseas job, our guide to verifying an NRI groom explains how the employer, visa status and address get checked through investigators in the other country.
Build an evidence file the police can use
A folder of WhatsApp forwards is weak. We prepare a dated log of the profile, chats, numbers and payments and help with the Section 63 certificate electronic records need under the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. Our article on what detective evidence holds up in court explains why that matters later.
Spot the second wave
Victims often get a follow-up call from “cyber police” or a “recovery agency” offering to fix things for a fee. The Delhi racket above used fake police callers too. We check who is actually calling before you respond.
“Ask the man on the screen to wave his hand slowly in front of his face, or turn and show you his ear. You’ll be amazed how often the network drops at that exact moment. That’s not proof of anything on its own. It is a reason to slow down and get the person checked.”

What can’t a private investigator do?
Plenty. A private investigator in India cannot lawfully get anyone’s call detail records, bank KYC, Aadhaar data or IP logs from a telecom company or platform. They can’t hack the scammer’s account, delete a video from someone else’s phone or “recover” your transfer. Those powers sit with the police and the courts, which is why your complaint needs to be on record before anyone else gets involved.
If you’re unsure where the legal lines fall for detective work generally, our guide on whether it’s legal to hire a private detective in India sets them out.
A composite case: the “doctor in Melbourne”
This is an anonymised composite drawn from several cases, not a single client’s record.
A divorced woman in her early forties from Gurugram met a man on a matrimonial site. He said he was a cardiologist in Melbourne with a sister in Rohini. For seven weeks he messaged morning and night; two video calls were grainy and short. Then came the gift: jewellery stuck at Delhi customs, and ?3.8 lakh to clear it, payable to an individual’s account.
Her brother called us before she paid. In four working days we found the photos on a fitness trainer’s public account overseas, no doctor by that name on the hospital’s staff pages, and no sister at the Rohini address. She filed a complaint and lost nothing.
The lesson: the family made one phone call before money left the account.
How do you spot an AI-built suitor before it costs you?
Watch for these warning signs, especially in combination:
- He or she moves the chat off the app to WhatsApp or Telegram within days.
- Video calls are rare, short, dark or “breaking up”, and never happen unplanned.
- The story has no verifiable people in it: no colleague, cousin or friend you could ever speak to.
- Affection escalates fast, then a sudden emergency needs money that only you can help with.
“Scammers are patient. Seven or eight weeks of good-morning messages is cheap for them when the payout is a few lakh. If the person has never once introduced you to a real human from their life, that silence is the loudest thing in the conversation.”

What does a romance scam investigation cost in Delhi NCR?
These are indicative 2027 ranges, case-dependent.
- Identity and story verification of an online contact in Delhi NCR: roughly ?15,000 to ?40,000.
- Overseas or NRI claims checked through partner investigators: roughly ?35,000 to ?1,00,000 or more, depending on the country.
- Evidence documentation for a sextortion or fraud complaint: roughly ?10,000 to ?25,000.

Legal & ethical note
Alliance Detective Agency works only within Indian law, including the right to privacy under Article 21 of the Constitution, the Information Technology Act, 2000, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. Extortion is an offence under Section 308 of the BNS, and publishing sexually explicit material is an offence under the IT Act, so reporting to the police is always the right first step. We never tap phones, install spyware on anyone’s device, hack accounts or obtain call records, bank, Aadhaar or telecom data. Any agency offering that is putting you at legal risk.
If the threats are weighing on you heavily, please don’t carry them alone. Speak to someone you trust today.
Frequently asked questions
Should I pay someone who is blackmailing me with a video?
No. Paying almost never ends it. Scammers treat a payment as proof that you can be squeezed, and the demand usually rises. Stop replying, keep every message and payment detail, report the account on the platform, call 1930 if money has already moved and file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in. Tell one person you trust so you aren’t handling it alone.
How do I file a sextortion complaint in India?
File online at cybercrime.gov.in (the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal) or call the 1930 helpline, then follow up at your district cyber police station. Keep screenshots of the profile, chats, phone numbers, UPI IDs and transaction references, and note your acknowledgement number. If intimate or morphed content has been posted, also report it to the platform, which must act on such complaints within 24 hours.
Can a private detective trace a romance scammer?
Partly. A professional, ethical investigator can trace where photos came from, test the story the person told you, and check claimed names, employers, addresses and families through public records and field enquiries. What they can’t lawfully do is pull call records, bank KYC or IP logs. Those reach the police through legal process, which is why your complaint must be on record.
Can a private investigator get my money back?
No investigator can reverse a transfer. Recovery depends on how fast the bank and police freeze funds through the 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in system, which is why the first hour matters. Be wary of anyone, including people claiming to be cyber police or a ‘recovery agency’, who asks for a fee to return your money. That is often a second scam.
How long does sextortion last in India?
There’s no fixed timeline, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. In many cases the threats fade once the victim stops responding, has blocked the accounts and has reported them, because the scammer moves to easier targets. Paying tends to prolong it. Keep your accounts locked down for some weeks and report any new contact on the same complaint.
Is it legal to hire a detective to check someone I met on a dating app?
Yes, if the agency uses lawful methods such as public records, open-source research and discreet field enquiries, and doesn’t touch the person’s phone, accounts or private data. Verifying a claimed identity, job or marital status before you commit money or marriage is a reasonable, common request. Ask the agency to explain its methods in writing before you hire it.
One phone call, in the right order
Romance scams and sextortion work because they isolate people. The fix is boring and effective: stop replying, save the evidence, call 1930 if money moved, file the complaint and tell someone. And if a new match feels a little too perfect, get them verified before you trust them with money or a wedding date.
We’ve spent more than 20 years doing that work across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, and for NRI families abroad. If you’d like a quiet, no-judgment conversation, contact our team and tell us only as much as you’re comfortable with.
